Grammy award winning trumpeter, Bruce Barrie, is a noted performer on modern and historical brasses, including the piccolo trumpet, keyed bugle, saxhorn, natural trumpet and cornetto. In addition to sixteen recordings with the renowned Chestnut Brass Company, Dr. Barrie is solo natural trumpet on the critically acclaimed Buxtehude Project (PGM), and is solo trumpet on the widely praised Naxos recording of the chamber music of George Antheil with the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. He has been a soloist with the Boulder Bach Festival, Philadelphia Classical Orchestra, Concerto Soloists and the Princeton Bach Festival. In demand as a guest artist and clinician, he has appeared at the Fantini Fest at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, the University of Northern Iowa and the University of West Virginia, Morgantown among others.
Hailed as “the Hero of the night” in the rave review of a recent performance of J.S. Bach’s monumental work the Christmas Oratorio with the Pro Music Colorado Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Barrie has also performed with the Colorado Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, the Colorado Ballet Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra as well as Boulder Brass. He has taught at Temple University in Philadelphia and Westchester University and serves on the trumpet jury of the International Brass Competition in Jeju South Korea. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Westchester University and the Philadelphia Musical Academy, Dr. Barrie has studied with Frank Kaderabek, Samuel Krauss, Terry Sawchuk and James Burke. Dr. Barrie is a founding member of the Chestnut Brass Company, which started in Philadelphia in 1977.
